Starting dipankar.name finally !

I have been lately thinking about what to do with my “real” site, i figured out that i can cut out some of the more personal post into dipankar.name :) . So see you there for more subjective crap.

Posts, tweets and nothing

I am starting from nothing, very little tweeting @dipankarsarkar , and hardly any blog posts here. So 1st December is an attempt at reviving my non-existent web presence. So what keeps me so busy from even writing a simple blog post, i will try to summarize that over the next points

  • Sometime a year back i realized that family was important :) , so yes i definitely spend a lot more time with my family. It has been a really good thing for me personally. Lots of things have worked out which will be crucial going forward.
  • Last year, i was working at mpower mobile working with some of India’s best python coders (Sirtaj and Supreet) which really has made me realize the what i was missing out on before. The existence of FOSS.IN was not known to me before that, an honest admission. Guess, Delhi (especially IIT) did not have the culture where i could get exposed to such things back then. Spent some more time figuring out what i wanted to learn technically.
  • Kwippy was a great experience, that would be another 5 blog posts of ranting to get it out of my system. Right now, its kind of fallen off the grid and the void really hurts. It will be back, but still resolving my personal issues with what i really want to do next as an entrepreneur. Huge learning’s out of it in project management & team building.
  • Started working on new things in the mean while looking at Social enterprises through STIR-e and Social media through Electrosocial, they really had me working and learning things that i am sure books cannot teach. The details of running an organization can get completely sidelined when one is thinking about the potential of the idea at hand, it is a major impedance towards learning more.
  • Internet in India is growing but not at a pace where we can talk about scaling and crazy architecture. Mobile in India is however another story all together, the problems that they face are truly challenging in scale and complexity. So in a lot of ways, i am looking at mobile as the key vertical to work in technically.
  • Right now, i am looking for an internet or mobile opportunity in New Delhi. So that is the next immediate challenge at hand.

Question is why so many things, the answer is fairly simple i guess. There is so much to do and learn, as long as time and resources can be managed. Of course, in due time one must push concepts that survive the test of time and have the potential to win and make it big.

Mosambe for starters

Mosambe is a one-stop shop to find the right jobs and the right talent. It is a platform for you to network with your colleagues, gain greater visibility and find new opportunities. For companies- setting up a branded account, posting a job and finding the right talent is simple, easy, effective and hassle free.

Mosambe(http://mosambe.com) is the creation of Kaasu info ventures private limited, a small team based out of Hyderabad. It is by far the most social and nice looking professional networking site in India, and clearly has the potential to challenge the biggies in the India online job market. The coolest parts and in some ways the differentiators are

  • My own cool professional homepage After registering on the site, I was able to get http://dipankar.mosambe.com . Out of all the professional sites on the internet, none have focused on creating the right kind of professional homepages.

  • Support for employers, the system has built in work flows which are meant to help the employers / HR consultants find the right kind of jobs. The primary job is to manage the various list of selected people and also being able to search the right kind of people.
  • Great search, like most job sites it has a great search which works great for both the employers and the employees. The intelligent search also sends automatic mailers when people keep getting you as a search result, all we want is a perfect fit for the employee and the employer in this tough market condition.

  • LinkedIn importer So you already have a linkedin profile, too lazy to fill in a new one. Try out the mosambe linkedin importer which will crawl your linkedin profile and fill up the missing blanks in your cool professional homepage.
  • Awesome support The mosambe guys love to enable people and have made it real easy to send in feedback about the site and any problems you face. It has been built for “your” specific needs and the people decide how to make it bigger, faster and better.
  • Social jobbing Mosambe has always believed that professional does not mean “asocial” , we can all be friends and still gain off each other. Message each other, add them as friends, ask them for testimonials and more …. Its the new age of social jobbing.
  • Ethical Mosambe does not intend to spam people and it comes out in the site manifesto. I have been a part of many job sites and feel that these guys spam rather unecessarily. This is pretty much the DNA of a good internet portal in my view.

Mosambe clearly has a lot difference in terms of what it offers to the India job market (which seems to be stuck in the naukri.com era and refuses to come out to web 2.0), only time will tell how this will pan out.

Feel free to email me at me@dipankar.name for an invite to this amazing service.

Awesome proto.in, jan 2009

Proto has been taking place for sometime, but Jan 2009 is my first proto.in attendance and it was worth the trip to Bangalore. I went in with some expectations and yes, they were fulfilled. The highlights of the event is given below.

  • Awesome talks – There was one talk by Bob Young(founder of redhat) which was simply awesome. There were others as well which were informative and fun sessions.
  • Great audience – People from all walks of professional life, met a lawyer, a HR guy, a finance guy and so on … with so much variety one can only choose to get bored of such company.
  • Neat theme / tshirt - The paper plane theme was awesome and in one session where Kiruba got everyone to throw airplanes onto the podium was especially lots of fun.
  • Techies – Special mention to Sheryas , Aswin , Moyeen , Vijay who made it clear to me that B’lore + Chennai is still very much ahead on the super nerd density index. Clever engineers to hang out with is the least i can say about these guys.
  • Startups – Last but not the least, a great bunch of startups were there promoting their stuff. It was cool to see some interesting revenue models and different ideas. Shotgun startup was one fun event to take part in :) (this deserves a complete post by itself).

All in all, I had a lot of fun. Thanks to Vijay and the proto team for making me a part of something awesome. Looking forward to making proto a bigger and better event going ahead.
