Social media primer for politicians

It has been something that has been going on in my head for a significant amount of time and I believe that it is the right time for politicians and famous individuals to take their online reputation management as seriously as the offline one. Here, i will outline a very basic strategy that i believe will equip celebrities and politicians to strengthen their brands.

So lets start with some assumptions that will make our lives easier as the post goes on.

  • Paid advertising stand-alone is not an effective way of reaching out.
  • A holistic or integrated approach towards internet marketing is what will allow long-term gains.
  • Like most blog posts, this is highly subjective. Feel free to improve, argue, debate any points.

So with this initial setup we can charge into how a politician X can become an online brand.

Goals

To plan for the next coming elections, which means that it has to be a sustained campaign over the next 2-3 years to make a meaningful impact.

It also has to ensure that he remains at a peak during his election times, and is able to sustain public interaction at a locality level.

Mechanisms available

We all seem to assume that social media, by default is the internet. In a country with nearly 430 million wireless connections, a strategy also needs to address the offline, but mobile populace.

So here is a list of potential ways of reaching the user using social media

  • Internet – Blogs / content
  • Mobile (SMS, MMS or GPRS)
  • Internet – Social networks
  • and many more …

The list can go on, but it is all dependant on the target audience which may be some remote district in West Bengal (India).
Why ? Why not ?

“One does not fit all”, and that is the reality. I would love to use social media to create and enhance everybody’s reputation. For an example, an MLA from a remote bihar village has no use for social media in his political career (unless of course he has national / state level ambitions).

Cosmopolitan cities like kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore have all shown that the internet may emerge as a potentially important mechanism for party propaganda as well as reputation management.

So if you guys want to have a chat with me discussing this further, do comment or email me at me@dipankar.name.

Delhi airport : good infrastructure, bad people

On the 15th, I landed at the new IGI terminal from Hyderabad at about 12.10. Hyderabad was a good experience, but most importantly i realized the most striking things about Delhi as soon as I landed.

The Delhi IGI airport is truly international now (at least by the looks of it), swank restaurants, shops and more. The saddest part is that the people have failed to change their attitude. This is reflected in the what happened when i went to the pre-paid taxi booth (manned by the Delhi police)

t1-3-big

So I walked up and said that i wanted to go to C R Park (South Delhi), and gave him a 500 ruppee note. In a moment, he took out a 100 ruppee note and said, sir you need to give me more (as the fare was 150 ruppee). Well, I had just landed and was a bit taken aback as I really did not expect this to happen. I did not say anything (call it my fault) and gave him another hundred.

On the back of my mind was the fact that I had indeed given Rs. 500 and, was having a look at my wallet content and doing the math. I decided to go back, just when I was to turn the guy shouts back and call me. He says I think I made a mistake (?) you had given a Rs. 500 note. The irony is that the notes are so different that this mistake is next to impossible.  So this is incident #1 at our superb capital city airport manned by its own police force.

Me think the structure of the notes should also change, given people manning such crucial places make mistakes. Lets put other politicians on the notes, enough of Gandhi’ ji on the notes.

Now that I had the cab (and my money), I decided not to take this matter up and headed to pre-paid taxi area. Got a nice guy who did not crib about going to South Delhi. As we were getting out, so one random “employee” of the “private” airport got into my car repeatedly saying he needed to go to Chirag Delhi and showed me his card. I said no, I do not wish anyone. He still got on forcefully, (did not catch his name, but he got off duty at 12.30 at night and is apparently some security guy there) and said he never gets on car unless the occupants allow him to (which I did not).

It had been a long day, and no energy left. Told him to shut up and sit quietly, while we headed back to home. After he got down, I asked the cab driver if this happens often. Apparently it does happen often, and inevitably they force themselves upon the occupants. This was incident #2 by the security staff at the airport.

The saddest part is that we have awesome infrastructure, but we our thinking is completely selfish. I would have not said no to this so-called employee if he had not forced himself into the cab. On average, a good experience is marred by these corrupt individuals out to exploit their clients / customers.

So DAIL and Delhi police get a big thumbs down for not ensuring better personnel manning these place.

Hyderabad : heat relief – #hyderabad

Today, i reached Hyderabad on a one day stay (well, i am out by tomorrow evening). The weather here is so f**king awesome that it had to be documented. For the last one week, I have been trying to locate cities where I can live without getting a heat stroke. Reaching Hyderabad today really made my day, now i have located a city which is not going to become a desert any time soon.

sahara-desert

The traffic was relatively less and the trip from the airport to the place where I am staying was smooth to say the least. Staying in Delhi for the last 8 years, I have completely forgotten a life without the dust, heat and super traffic (beep beep). At 27 degrees, its the perfect climate post a very dry and hot summer for the whole nation. Till now the electricity and power has been good to me, which is making me very very happy.

Here are some graphs which measure some of the temperature and rainfall averages for both the cities over the year. Delhi is clearly becoming hotter and dryer. Will need to see if i can find some data to support that. Have fun, for all the stat minded people out there.

IIT versus everyone

“Life’s fair if you don’t compare”

The basis of article is the above quote which has no known author. Yesterday, i was sitting with my friends and i was the only IITian sitting there. When these guys started talking about their university life, well I started to realize that the golden years of fun for them were the toughest years for me and my batch. To start this all out, lets go back to the end of 12th and then college life.

Most of the other university kids start their life in college looking out for opportunities to explore life and have fun, the consequences are very much secondary. But in IIT, to tell you the honest truth there is a lot at stake if you mess it up. Take for example attendance … IITs are very very strict (at least my dept. was) compared to Delhi University or for that matter any other. A lot of people have had a DISCO (disciplinary committee) sitting on them for reasons that could be argued as trivial / juvenile mistakes. Basically, fun is not something for the light hearted in our premier institutes.

Now why am i writing about this :D … the point i want to make is that the 4 years of slogging results in a conception of the world which is extremely utilitarian and to some extent makes you a cynic. Well, we all come out relatively rich in the process, but i do think in an evolving economy like ours making money is not as impossible as it used to be. I am trying here not to be a cynic :P and have fun writing this stuff … IIT has taught me a lot about people , thinking, and life in general, but maybe just maybe i missed out on all the fun my friends were having. As they say time is money, and i guess most IITians have it built in when they go into the battlefield of life.

I had to compare … even if it is an apple / oranges comparison … feel free to flame me :D .
