10 million ruppees and Porsche911

The following video of Yuvraj singh hitting Broad for 6 sixes in one over in an do or die match, it is worth 10 million ruppes and a Porsche 911 (BCCI presented him with both). This is great for the game and puts being a cricketer back into fashion :).

Enjoi it, i did. Awesome….. even better now that we are world champions.

today is “young india day”

Today young India is back with a bang, be it politics or cricket. Earlier today the Congress (the majority party in the ruling coalition) announced some young changes to the cabinet and their party positions. Leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Priya Dutt, have been given big-time responsibility, I am sure they will deliver and take our nation to greater heights. Congress i must add is here to stay.

And how can we forget the ICC Twenty20 world cup, India played 4 pressure matches to take the cup. First it was England (Yuvraj was the star) , South Africa (Rohit was the star), Australia (Yuvraj played well) and Pakistan (The whole team was awesome). The best part was that we did not have the highest wicket taking bowlers, highest run scorers … and yet we have the world cup. The fielding was awesome, Robin Singh has instilled the same discipline he had as a fielder in this young team. Venkatesh Prasad has brought the MRF bowling academy discipline into our killer seamers. The whole team is coming across as a great package.

I must thank this Indian team for getting back that faith in cricket for me. Move over Formula one, cricket is back with a bang. If we play like this, win or lose … i will god damn watch every match we play. It felt so good to see us fight, something that Ganguly had as a captain , and Dhoni has made me believe in US once again.

HIP HIP HORRAY … all the money .. all the fame … but it was about the cricket that we played. Special mention to misba-ul-haq for putting up a great fight, Pakistan has an awesome team. May the sub-continent tigers (read SL, India, Pakistan,Bangladesh) move ahead and play good cricket ….

Rahul gandhiYOUNG INDIA …… 3 cheers to us ……. final

Payment gateways

I have been doing some work lately on how one can take payments or pay the client in the easiest way possible. This leads me to doing some research on currently available gateways. Some of the contenders are:

1. Paypal - a decent service, but takes a lot of money for transferring money. Its ok ..

2. Google Checkout - I am gonna checkout what it has to offer, should have a great API like all the other google products.

3. CCAvenue - it supports my  debit cards so i really like them. They can become the yodlee of the indian web companies (if they can get some kind of an API act together)

4. Amazon payment gateway - beta beta … need an invite to use it … flat payment looks good

More as i keep adding to this research :).

Progress post

What progress have i made on the various things i have started to work on :

1. Something really cool that i have been working on with a really great partner of mine will be released soon. This is going to change how collaboration works across the internet :P.

2. The really cool slideshare upload features are done, next comes some really hard core stuff .. which i will definitely blog about so stay tuned…

3. The libpurple stuff was too much fun .. i think i will look at implementing XMPP file transfer for it … i really think that IM fie transfer kinda sucks in libpurple

4. bahh i cant think of anything more … i was though considering making a “widget.com” widget … only an iframe with crap filled in it he he … maybe later

more later …

Slideshare releases URL and email uploads

Today , after a seriously long deployment at slideshare we have released URL and email upload. These add to the exisiting means of pushing content into slideshare. Let me list the ways of pushing content into slideshare.net ..

  • Normal uploads
    • Single - works on all machines
    • Bulk (multiple uploads at one go) - fails on firefox on linux.
  • URL uploads
    • Bulk - basically copy a bunch of urls, which will be uploaded to slideshare
    • Using plugins - We at slideshare have made two plugins (one for firefox another for IE) which will allow the user to upload into slideshare any online presentation they like with a single click.
  • Email upload - just mail a presentation and it will get uploaded to slideshare.net

So there are 3 broad ways of pushing content, the most useful among the recently introduced email upload. It will save the conference organizers a lot of headache when they give out one common email address where all the presenters can upload their presentations.  This is also useful for people on the move, fire a presentation from their handhelds to slideshare.

More when it is officially posted on http://blog.slideshare.net

virality with a kapital ‘V’

The web is currently obsessed with this concept of virality, how can a site grow exponentially in terms of traffic, user registrations and ten thousand other metrics. This reminds me of some sort of a gold rush, very little analysis behind what is right or wrong … people seem to be blinded by success and attempt to replicate it rather blindly.

With the advent of web 2.0, the metrics for measuring the success of an application has been the number of users in the system, how the social network evolves …. etc etc. I saw it very specifically in a video at googleplex by the founders of billmonk.com , the first thing they listed was about their user registration growth rates blah … even facebook founder at f8 convention displayed some crappy “extrapolated” user growth graphs …. the funniest part is … these guys forget that the growth rate is bounded in effect by the slow pace of internet growth in US and europe.

I am perplexed at how simple math can really skew up people’s attitude towards products. facebook is like crazy big, or is it ? Alexa still puts Myspace.com as the king … what say to that …. hyper Virality has been achieved by applications which are really useful and keep users in the system (widgets play an important role in such applications).

We all think that fooling the user into registration may work, but stickiness seems to play an important role for a brand to succeed. To get that one needs a real utility, look at hotornot.com simple concept … but it has been really taken to the next level in terms of utility …. ego massaging with social networking … works for most people … simplicity really played the key role for HoN.  I really feel portals need to assess their proposition to the user before looking at hyper viral tactics
